India CNAP Caller Name Display Service Begins November 1: Unknown Numbers Will Now Show Caller Name

Mobile users across India will now see the name of the caller along with the phone number when an unknown number rings, with the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) service coming into effect from 1 November 2026 on 4G and 5G networks.

The Department of Telecommunications has directed all telecom operators to roll out the service, so users do not need to register separately or download any new application. The feature works through the network itself and displays the caller’s registered name on the receiver’s screen.

If the calling number is already saved in the phone, the name saved by the user will continue to appear. If the number is not saved, the screen will show the name recorded in the telecom operator’s subscriber records, making it easier to identify unknown callers without relying on third-party caller-identification apps.

There are two exceptions to the display. Calls coming from abroad will show only an international-call indication rather than a name, and subscribers who have opted for the caller-line-identification-restriction facility, which keeps their identity hidden, will not have their name displayed.

The service follows recommendations made by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India in February 2024, after which the Department of Telecommunications issued directions to operators on 13 October 2026 to implement CNAP in their service areas from 1 November 2026. The stated aim is to help people identify unknown calls more easily and to curb spam and fraudulent calls.

Officials and experts caution that a displayed name alone does not make a call fully trustworthy. Users are advised to stay alert on calls seeking bank, one-time-password or money-related details and to verify any suspicious call before sharing personal information, even when a familiar-looking name appears on the screen.
