Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced LPG cylinder refill subsidies worth Rs 1,500 crore for more than 1.89 crore eligible families in the state on the occasion of Diwali. The Chief Minister announced the distribution in Lucknow on 3 November 2026, saying in a post on X that the subsidy would be distributed in Lucknow, extending support to millions of poor households across Uttar Pradesh.

In his post, the Chief Minister said that on the auspicious occasion of Diwali, LPG cylinder refill subsidies worth Rs 1,500 crore would be distributed to more than 1.89 crore eligible families in the state. He said the support is meant to ensure that economic difficulties do not force families to return to cooking on traditional, smoke-emitting stoves, and he added that no poor family should be forced back to smoke-filled traditional stoves because of financial difficulties. The message frames the subsidy as a Diwali-season welfare push aimed squarely at households that can least afford a break in their cooking fuel.

The subsidy is linked to the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the central government scheme that has given poor households access to clean cooking fuel through LPG connections. The Chief Minister highlighted the contribution of the Ujjwala Yojana, saying it had ensured access to clean cooking fuel for poor households and provided women with better health, convenience and dignity. The refill subsidy builds on that foundation: where Ujjwala gave families the connection, the state support helps them keep refilling the cylinder and stay with clean fuel rather than slipping back to smoke-emitting chulhas.

The Chief Minister also used the announcement to contrast his government’s priorities with those of previous governments in Uttar Pradesh. He said his government had prioritised public welfare over dynastic politics, and alleged that when a government’s priority was its own family, the suffering of poor households remained overlooked in governance. The remarks underline the political framing of the announcement as proof, in the Chief Minister’s words, that a double-engine government delivers welfare to poor women where dynasty-driven regimes failed them.

For the families covered, the practical benefit is straightforward. More than 1.89 crore eligible families across the state are covered by the Rs 1,500 crore distribution, and the subsidy is aimed at easing the cost of LPG refills at a time when household budgets are under pressure. Clean cooking fuel matters most for women, who do most of the cooking in poor households and who bear the health cost of smoke from traditional stoves, including breathing difficulty and eye irritation from daily exposure to smoke indoors.

Eligible families should watch for the distribution process announced by the state government and keep their LPG connection and beneficiary details ready, as the subsidy is being routed through the existing Ujjwala-linked framework. With the announcement made in Lucknow on Diwali, the distribution marks one of the largest single welfare disbursals of the festival season in Uttar Pradesh, and it reinforces the state’s pitch that welfare delivery, not promises, is the measure of its governance.
