Amit Shah Presents President’s Police Colour to Chandigarh Police on 60th Raising Day
Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented the President’s Police Colour to the Chandigarh Police on Sunday 1 November 2026, marking the force’s 60th Raising Day with a ceremonial parade at the Police Lines in Sector 26. Shah took the salute at the diamond jubilee parade and presented the honour on behalf of President Droupadi Murmu, in a ceremony attended by Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, who presided over the function.
The parade followed the traditional format for such an occasion, with a guard of honour, inspection of the parade, a march past and the salute. An officer of the force accepted the Colour, which is regarded as the highest honour that can be conferred on a police force in India. The presentation recognised the collective record of the Chandigarh Police rather than any individual act of gallantry.
The honour had been approved by the President on the proposal of the Union Territory, after assessment by the Bureau of Police Research and Development under the Union Home Ministry. Officials have pointed to the force’s work in adopting modern policing technology, tackling cybercrime, managing traffic and providing prompt assistance to citizens as part of the record behind the award.
Chandigarh Police traces its present form to 1 November 1966, when the force was reorganised with three police stations and 1,647 personnel, responsible for about 30 sectors and 23 villages. Six decades on, the force serves the Union Territory that is also the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, and the Raising Day ceremony marked that journey from a small reorganised force to a modern city police.
During the ceremony Shah also flagged off new vehicles for induction into the force’s fleet, adding to its operational capacity. The vehicle flag-off formed part of the Raising Day programme at the Police Lines, alongside the Colour presentation and the parade.
The ceremony was the centrepiece of Shah’s two-day visit to Chandigarh and Panchkula, which began on Saturday evening when he arrived in the Tricity and stayed overnight in Panchkula. The presentation of the President’s Police Colour on the force’s 60th Raising Day places Chandigarh Police among the forces in the country to have received the honour, and underlines the Centre’s recognition of its six decades of service.
