The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) has revised the eligibility criteria for the Assistant Teacher (Trained Graduate Grade) recruitment 2026, giving relief to a section of teacher-education candidates. Under the revised rules, candidates who were admitted to Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) or equivalent teacher education programmes before 29 July 2011 will be exempted from the minimum graduation percentage requirement. The change was made through a notification dated 4 November 2026.

The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the inclusion of a proviso in the recruitment eligibility conditions to bring the state’s rules in line with the guidelines of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the statutory body that lays down minimum qualifications for teachers. The decision follows an NCTE notification issued on 13 November 2019, which amended its earlier notification dated 23 August 2010. The revised provision was subsequently addressed in a notification issued by the Uttar Pradesh Board of High School and Intermediate Education on 22 October.

The background to the relaxation goes back to the NCTE’s minimum-qualification notifications. The NCTE’s notification of 23 August 2010 laid down the qualifications for appointment as a teacher, and its amendment of 29 July 2011 set the framework that applied to candidates admitted to teacher education courses before that date. Candidates who took admission to B.Ed. or B.El.Ed. programmes before 29 July 2011 were trained under the earlier rules, and the new proviso recognises that position by removing the minimum graduation marks barrier for them. Under the revised criteria, such candidates will not be disqualified for failing to secure the prescribed minimum marks in graduation.

The relaxation applies to Assistant Teacher vacancies in government-recognised and aided secondary schools across Uttar Pradesh. The commission has advised candidates who meet the revised eligibility conditions to apply within the prescribed application period. The latest notification does not extend or otherwise change the existing application deadline, so candidates should check the official recruitment notification and the revised eligibility conditions before submitting their applications, and rely only on the official UPESSC website for the final schedule.

For candidates who were earlier held back by the graduation marks rule, the change opens the door to apply for the 2026 Assistant Teacher recruitment. Those admitted to B.Ed., B.El.Ed. or equivalent courses before 29 July 2011 should verify their admission date against their course records, read the 4 November 2026 notification carefully, and complete their application within the prescribed period.
