Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Friday alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab spent elsewhere the Rs 1,600 crore flood relief corpus announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the flood-hit state last year. Speaking to the media at Haryana Niwas in Chandigarh, Saini said the funds meant to support Punjab after last year’s devastating floods failed to reach the people who needed them.
Saini said he had watched a video on social media in which Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann promised to compensate flood losses “down to a single hen” and said he did not need to look to the Centre for funds. The Haryana Chief Minister questioned how the relief money was used, saying the corpus announced by the Prime Minister for Punjab’s flood victims was diverted for other purposes by the Mann government. The allegation was reported by the Press Trust of India and carried by ThePrint and Mirror Now.
In the same interaction, Saini targeted the Punjab government over crop procurement and payments to farmers, alleging that funds from the Centre meant for farmers were diverted. He contrasted Punjab with Haryana, saying farmers in Haryana receive payment for procured crops within 48 to 72 hours, and are paid with interest if the delay exceeds that period. He called this a guarantee of the “double-engine” government and said Haryana is the first state in the country to procure all crops from farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Saini said his government has fulfilled 76 key manifesto pledges, and questioned Mann’s promise to procure the entire harvest at MSP.
Saini also took a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his debate challenge to the Prime Minister, inviting him to Haryana for a face-off with the BJP Yuva Morcha president. The remarks came on a day when Saini also announced a 3 per cent dearness allowance hike for Haryana government employees and pensioners and released Rs 4,470.77 crore in direct benefit transfers, including the 13th instalment of the Deen Dayal Lado Lakshmi Yojana. The flood-relief charge adds a fresh flashpoint to the running political argument between the BJP government in Haryana and the AAP government in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Punjab assembly elections.
