The Nikshay Poshan Yojana gives nutritional support in cash to people being treated for tuberculosis (TB). It has run since 1 April 2018 under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. In October 2024, the Government raised this support from ₹500 a month to ₹1,000 a month. The money is paid for the full duration of treatment, by Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) straight into the patient’s bank account.

How Much Support Is Given

Every notified TB patient gets ₹1,000 a month under the Nikshay Poshan Yojana. TB treatment usually lasts at least six months, so a patient receives a total of ₹3,000 to ₹6,000, depending on how long the treatment runs. The Government has said the increase benefits about 25 lakh TB patients a year. By October 2024, ₹3,202 crore had been paid to 1.13 crore beneficiaries through DBT under this scheme.

Who Is Eligible

All TB patients whose cases are registered (notified) on the Ni-kshay portal are eligible. It does not matter whether the patient is treated at a government hospital or by a private provider — the condition is that the case is notified on the Ni-kshay portal and the patient is under treatment under the NTEP. There is no separate application form to fill; the DBT support starts after notification.

Extra Nutrition for Underweight Patients

For patients whose Body Mass Index (BMI) is below 18.5, the Government has also introduced Energy Dense Nutritional Supplementation (EDNS). This extra nutrition is given during the first two months of treatment. Alongside this, under the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, Ni-kshay Mitras — individuals, organisations and groups — support patients with food baskets and other help. Household contacts of TB patients have also been brought within the scope of this community support.

How the Money Reaches the Patient

The support is paid by DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) directly into the patient’s Aadhaar-linked bank account. So correct registration on the Ni-kshay portal and correct bank account details are essential. If the money does not arrive, the patient should contact the health centre where treatment is being taken, or the District TB Officer. TB testing and treatment are free at government health facilities.
