Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Shaheed Smarak, the memorial to the martyrs of the First War of Independence of 1857, at Nanehra in Ambala Cantonment on Wednesday, 5 November 2026. Shah unveiled the museum at the memorial complex in the afternoon and addressed a public meeting at Gandhi Ground in Ambala Cantonment after the inauguration. The memorial, built over about 22 acres near National Highway 44, will open to the public on Thursday, 6 November 2026.
Addressing the gathering, Shah said the Ambala memorial would be an inspiration for the youth and that the soldiers and warriors of the 1857 revolution had made the supreme sacrifice for the country. He also praised Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, saying that Saini speaks less but works very fast. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Haryana minister Anil Vij were present at the programme along with senior BJP leaders and officials.
The memorial, named Azadi ki Pehli Ladai ka Shaheed Smarak, has 23 galleries depicting different aspects of the 1857 uprising and a 63-metre lotus-shaped tower. The names of more than 700 martyrs associated with the 1857 struggle are inscribed in golden letters at the memorial. The complex uses modern technology, exhibitions and interactive displays to present the history of the uprising in Ambala, Haryana, Meerut, Delhi, Punjab, Gujarat, Jhansi and beyond, and it is described as Asia’s largest martyrs’ memorial.
The memorial’s establishment is rooted in research crediting the late historian Professor K. C. Yadav, whose work identified the martyrs whose names are inscribed at the site and supported the claim that the 1857 revolt began in Ambala. Haryana Energy, Transport and Labour Minister Anil Vij reviewed the preparations at the memorial and Gandhi Ground before the inauguration and has planned a special tourist bus service to help visitors reach the memorial. The inauguration was held as part of Haryana’s 60th Foundation Day celebrations.
