The Central Government’s Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) frees women in poor households from smoky wood stoves. The scheme began on 1 May 2016 from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh. Its second phase, Ujjwala 2.0, began on 10 August 2021 from Mahoba. By 1 July 2026, 10.58 crore LPG connections had been released across India. An eligible woman gets an LPG connection without any security deposit — and under Ujjwala 2.0, the first refill and the stove are also free.

Who gets it

The benefit goes to an adult woman of a poor household. Eligible categories include BPL households, SC/ST households, PM Awas Yojana beneficiaries, Antyodaya Anna Yojana households and other notified poor categories. The most important condition is that the household must not already have an LPG connection in anyone’s name — if a connection already exists, the application is rejected. Under Ujjwala 2.0, migrant worker families can also join through self-declaration.

What is free

The government pays for the cylinder’s security deposit, the pressure regulator, the Suraksha safety hose, the consumer booklet and installation. Under Ujjwala 2.0, the first refill and the hotplate (stove) are also free. After that, a targeted subsidy of ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder comes directly into the bank account by DBT. From financial year 2026-27, this ₹300 subsidy applies to the first 4 refills in a year — earlier it was up to 9 refills.

How to apply

Application details are on the official portal pmuy.gov.in — choose your LPG company (Indane, Bharat Gas or HP Gas) and fill the form. You can also apply at the nearest LPG distributor or CSC centre. An Aadhaar card and proof of eligibility are needed with the application. The application status can be checked on pmuy.gov.in using the request number, and the subsidy status is visible on mylpg.in and the UMANG app.

Why this scheme matters

Cooking on firewood, coal and cow-dung cakes fills the home with smoke, causing breathing diseases in women and children. LPG cooking is faster, cleaner and safer. 10.58 crore connections mean smoke-free kitchens in crores of homes. Because the subsidy comes directly into the bank account, the help is certain to reach the right person.
