The Central Government’s Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) — also called Har Ghar Jal — is the mission to give safe drinking water through a tap to every rural household. It began on 15 August 2019 and is run by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The promise is a Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) in every rural home, supplying water of fixed quantity and quality on a regular basis.

How much progress has been made

When the mission began in 2019, only 3.23 crore (17%) rural households had tap water at home. Now more than 15.80 crore (81.61%) of the 19.36 crore rural households have tap water — meaning over 12.56 crore new connections since 2019. By August 2026, 188 districts, 1,090 blocks, 1.01 lakh Gram Panchayats and 2.04 lakh villages had been certified as Har Ghar Jal.

JJM 2.0 — the target till December 2028

The first target of full coverage by 2024 could not be met. So on 10 March 2026, the Union Cabinet approved the mission’s extension as JJM 2.0 till December 2028 — with a total outlay of ₹8.69 lakh crore (Central share ₹3.59 lakh crore). The focus of JJM 2.0 shifts from just building connections to delivering service — water coming through the tap regularly, in fixed quantity and fixed quality. A national digital framework called Sujalam Bharat is also being built, putting every village’s complete drinking-water system on a digital map.

What are the quantity and quality standards

Under JJM, every home is to get 55 litres per capita per day of water, and the water quality must meet the BIS:10500 standard. A connection counts as “functional” only when water is supplied in adequate quantity, of prescribed quality, on a regular and long-term basis. A Gram Panchayat can declare itself Har Ghar Jal only after the State Government has set up complete in-village arrangements for operating and maintaining the water system.

How to know your village’s status

This is not an individual-application scheme — tap connections are laid under the village’s drinking-water plan. To know your village’s status, visit the JJM dashboard (ejalshakti.gov.in) and open the report for your state, district and village, or contact your Gram Panchayat. Information about the mission is on the official portal jaljeevanmission.gov.in.
