The Central Government’s Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is old-age security for workers in the unorganised sector and small earners. The scheme began on 9 May 2015 and is run by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). After the age of 60, it pays a guaranteed monthly pension of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 — the pension amount is fixed in advance and is not affected by market ups and downs.
How much pension and how much to pay
APY offers five pension options — ₹1,000, ₹2,000, ₹3,000, ₹4,000 or ₹5,000 a month. The monthly contribution depends on two things — the pension chosen and the age at joining. The younger you join, the less you pay. As per the official chart — joining at age 18, the contribution is ₹42 a month for a ₹1,000 pension and ₹210 a month for a ₹5,000 pension. Joining at age 40, the same figures rise to ₹291 and ₹1,454 a month. Contributions are auto-debited monthly (or quarterly/half-yearly) till age 60.
Who can join
Any Indian citizen aged 18 to 40 with a savings bank account or post office savings account can join APY. One important condition — since 1 October 2022, income-tax payers cannot open new APY accounts. Those who joined on or before 30 September 2022 continue on their original terms. The scheme is designed especially for unorganised-sector workers — labourers, street vendors, domestic workers and small shopkeepers.
What security does the family get
The pension begins at age 60 and continues for life. After the subscriber’s death, the spouse continues to receive the same pension. After both pass away, the accumulated corpus goes to the nominee — about ₹1.7 lakh for a ₹1,000 pension and about ₹8.5 lakh for a ₹5,000 pension. Exiting before 60 returns only your own contributions plus the net actual returns earned — so join it as a long-term saving.
How to open an account
An APY account is opened at your bank branch or post office — fill the APY form with your Aadhaar number, mobile number and pension choice. The contribution is auto-debited from the savings account, so always keep the required balance in it — a missed instalment can attract a penalty.
