Pune, 3 November 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated Pune Metro Line-3, the Pink Line, and laid the foundation stone for Phase-II metro projects in the city, in a major push for urban transport in Maharashtra. The projects together are worth around Rs 21,800 crore.

The Prime Minister joined the programme through video conference. The inauguration and foundation-laying ceremony marked a new chapter for Pune, one of India’s fastest-growing cities, where lakhs of people travel every day for work, study and business.

The Pink Line, built at a cost of around Rs 8,300 crore, runs for about 23 kilometres from Maan to District Court. The route passes through Hinjewadi, the city’s large information technology hub, and will directly benefit thousands of IT professionals and students who travel to the area daily.

The line is being run by women operators, a step that highlights the growing role of women in operating and managing modern public transport systems. Around 30 per cent of the power used by the line comes from solar energy, making the project cleaner and more environment-friendly.

The Pink Line is the country’s first metro project developed under a public-private partnership model. It has been designed to reduce traffic congestion on Pune’s busy roads, cut travel time and offer a comfortable, reliable alternative to private vehicles.

Along with the Pink Line, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for Phase-II metro projects in Pune. These projects will further extend the metro network to more parts of the city and its suburbs, improving last-mile connectivity and supporting Pune’s rapid urban growth.

The expansion of the metro network is expected to boost economic activity, support the IT and services sector, and improve the quality of life for residents. Better public transport also helps reduce pollution and dependence on private vehicles.

The Pune Metro expansion reflects the central government’s focus on building modern, sustainable urban infrastructure across the country. With the Pink Line now operational, Pune joins the growing list of Indian cities with an expanding, modern metro rail network that puts commuters first.
