Union Home Minister Amit Shah has set the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) an ambitious target for Uttarakhand — winning more than 65 of the state’s 70 Assembly seats in the election due early next year. Addressing a public rally in Dehradun on Friday to mark the 26th Foundation Day of Uttarakhand, Shah called on party workers to ensure a “hat-trick” — a third consecutive BJP government in the state — by taking the party’s message to every household. He said Uttarakhand would be the first milestone in the country’s journey towards a developed India by 2047.
Shah reminded workers of the party’s past performances — 57 seats in 2017 and 47 seats in 2022 — and said the target this time is to cross 65. He urged workers to conduct door-to-door outreach and strengthen the party’s presence at every booth. The rally was held during Shah’s visit to the state, in which he presented the President’s Colour to the Uttarakhand Police and inaugurated 62 development projects worth Rs 1,475.31 crore. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was present at the events. Shah credited the “double engine” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre and Dhami in the state for the pace of Uttarakhand’s development.
The Home Minister used the rally to draw a sharp contrast with the Congress. He said that when the Congress is in power it talks of a “Muslim university”, while the BJP government is clearing government land of encroachments by removing illegal religious structures. He also took aim at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s “Vote Bachao” campaign, describing it as a “Ghuspathiya Bachao” (save the infiltrators) rally, and called for the removal of alleged infiltrators from the electoral rolls and from the country. Shah said the BJP aims to make Uttarakhand a secure and prosperous state and to turn Devbhoomi into the cultural capital of the country.
Shah also invoked the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), pointing out that Uttarakhand became the first state in the country to bring it into force in January 2025, and said the code would be implemented in all BJP-ruled states. He said the BJP government is working to develop border areas and stop migration from the hills, and that the journey towards a developed India will have Uttarakhand as its first stop. The Assembly elections in Uttarakhand are due in early 2027, and the Election Commission has not yet announced the poll schedule. The BJP currently governs the state, and Shah’s 65-seat target sets the tone for the party’s campaign in the months ahead.
