Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the INDIA bloc rally in Delhi, saying that if Gandhi wanted to become Prime Minister he could keep holding mock Parliament sessions for the rest of his life because his turn would never come. Shah made the remarks while addressing a gathering in Chandigarh.

Shah said the opposition rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan was held on 1 November, the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, and argued that holding the event on that date rubbed salt into the wounds of the victims and their families. He said the BJP had earlier urged the opposition not to hold the rally on 1, 2 or 3 November out of respect for the Sikh community.

The Home Minister said Rahul Gandhi had been losing elections for fifteen years, spanning three general elections, and added that a strategy of disruption — telling lies, spreading anarchy and not letting Parliament function — would keep him out of office. He described the Delhi event as a “jalsa” rather than a serious political programme.

Shah was in Chandigarh after inaugurating and laying foundation stones for development projects worth Rs 258 crore in the city. He told the gathering that the opposition’s approach had repeatedly failed at the ballot box and would continue to do so.

The opposition rally in Delhi had demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Shah dismissed the protest, saying voters, not street protests or mock sessions, decide who governs India.

He said the BJP would continue to take its development and national-unity message directly to the people, and that the opposition should judge its politics by election results rather than by disruption inside and outside Parliament.
