The Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) gives pregnant women free, quality antenatal care. It is a scheme of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, launched in June 2016. Under it, specialist doctors provide checkups at designated government health facilities on the 9th of every month. This is not a cash benefit — it is a free health service.

What the 9th-Day Checkup Covers

On the 9th, a pregnant woman gets a complete package in a single visit — a checkup by an OBGY specialist or physician, blood pressure, haemoglobin, sugar and weight checks, blood and urine tests, and an ultrasound where needed. Free medicines such as iron-folic acid and calcium and counselling are also given. Along with government doctors, private-sector specialists also volunteer their services on this day.

Who Can Go

The service is for all pregnant women, especially those who miss regular care. Under PMSMA, at least one specialist checkup is guaranteed for women in their second or third trimester. No advance registration is needed — just visit the designated government health facility on the fixed date. Carrying earlier checkup papers and the Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card makes the visit easier.

Spotting High-Risk Pregnancies

A major aim of PMSMA is to spot high-risk pregnancies in time. After the checkup, women are given a sticker — a green sticker for women with no risk factor detected, and a red sticker for women with a high-risk pregnancy. Women with a red sticker receive special monitoring and follow-up, so that they get the right care in time and both mother and child stay safe.

How to Use It in Haryana

In Haryana too, PMSMA runs on the 9th of every month at government health facilities — PHCs, CHCs and district hospitals. Ask the ASHA worker, ANM or the nearest health centre which facility is designated in your area. If the 9th is a holiday, check the centre’s fresh notice in advance. Along with the checkup, vaccination and nutrition advice are also available at the health centre.
