The Central Government’s PM Vishwakarma scheme is for traditional artisans who work with their hands — carpenters, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, potters, tailors, cobblers, masons, barbers and washermen. The scheme began on 17 September 2023, with an outlay of ₹13,000 crore (financial years 2023-24 to 2027-28). It gives four kinds of support together — an ID card, free training, a ₹15,000 toolkit and collateral-free loans up to ₹3 lakh at 5% interest.
Which 18 trades are covered
The scheme covers 18 traditional trades — carpenter, boat maker, armourer, blacksmith, hammer and tool kit maker, locksmith, goldsmith, potter, sculptor or stone carver and stone breaker, cobbler or footwear artisan, mason, basket or mat or broom maker and coir weaver, traditional doll and toy maker, barber, garland maker, washerman, tailor, and fishing net maker. The applicant must be 18 years or older and working in the unorganised sector with hands and traditional tools.
What you get
First, the artisan gets a PM Vishwakarma Certificate and ID card — formal recognition of their skill. Then comes free skill training, with a stipend of ₹500 per day paid directly into the bank account for the training days. After training and skill verification, a ₹15,000 toolkit e-voucher is given to buy modern tools. After that, a collateral-free loan follows — the first tranche of ₹1 lakh (repayable in 18 months) and, after repaying it on time, a second tranche of ₹2 lakh (30 months). The interest the beneficiary pays is only 5% a year; the government pays an 8% interest subvention on top.
Who is not eligible
Those who took a government self-employment loan under PMEGP, PM SVANidhi or Mudra in the last 5 years are not eligible for this scheme. The applicant must also actually work in the trade they apply for — hobbyists or factory-line workers are outside its scope.
How to apply
Registration is done on the official portal pmvishwakarma.gov.in or at the nearest CSC centre, where the CSC operator fills the form using Aadhaar biometric authentication. After registration come skill verification and training, then the toolkit voucher and loan eligibility. Never pay anyone for registration — it is free.
