The Central Government's Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is the national mission to bring banking to every person in India. The scheme began on 28 August 2014. Under it, any Indian citizen can open a bank account with no minimum balance — no money needs to be deposited to open the account. By August 2026, more than 59.04 crore Jan Dhan accounts had been opened across India, holding deposits of over ₹3.15 lakh crore.

What the account gives you

A Jan Dhan account is a Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) account. It earns interest like any normal savings account, and there is no penalty for keeping a zero balance. The account comes with a free RuPay debit card, making ATM withdrawals and digital payments easy. Accounts opened after 28 August 2018 carry ₹2 lakh free accident insurance with the RuPay card — on the condition that the card is active and in use.

What is the ₹10,000 overdraft

After the account has been operated satisfactorily for 6 months, an eligible account holder can get an overdraft facility of up to ₹10,000 — meaning up to ₹10,000 can be withdrawn even when the account has no balance. This facility is available to only one member per household (preferably a woman). Remember — an overdraft is a loan, not free money; it must be repaid under the bank's terms.

The DBT link with government schemes

The Jan Dhan account is the main channel for receiving government help. PM Kisan instalments, LPG subsidy, scholarships and pensions all come by Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) straight into this account. From the same account you can also join PM Suraksha Bima Yojana (₹2 lakh accident cover at ₹20/year), PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (life cover at ₹436/year) and Atal Pension Yojana — but these three apply only if you enrol yourself and give auto-debit consent.

How to open an account

The account can be opened at any bank branch or with a Bank Mitra (Business Correspondent). Take your Aadhaar card and one photograph — that is all it takes. Those without full documents can open a small account (Chota Khata), valid for 12 months. Never pay anyone to open the account — this facility is completely free.
