Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with the Indian contingent that participated in the Asian Para Games 2026 at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi on Thursday, November 5, at around 4.30 pm, and will also address the gathering. The Prime Minister’s Office announced the programme on Wednesday, November 4, describing it as an opportunity to recognise the achievements of Indian para-athletes who delivered the country’s best-ever performance at the continental sporting event. The interaction will bring the medal-winning athletes face to face with the Prime Minister a day before the nation turns its attention to the weekend’s other major events, and it underlines how seriously the country now takes para-sport.

India recorded its finest performance in the history of the Asian Para Games at the 2026 edition held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. A total of 97 Indian para-athletes won 114 medals, comprising 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze medals. The tally surpassed India’s previous best of 108 medals, including 27 gold, achieved at the 2023 edition in Hangzhou, China. The improvement is significant on both counts: the total medal count rose by six, and the gold count rose by three, showing that Indian para-athletes are not only reaching more finals but are also converting more of those finals into victories against the best in Asia.

The programme at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex will be attended by the participating athletes and their coaches, along with officials from the Paralympic Committee of India and the Indian Olympic Association, representatives of National Sports Federations, and officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The presence of coaches and federation officials matters because a record haul of this scale is never the work of athletes alone; it reflects years of training, classification support, sports science, funding and competitive exposure that allow para-athletes to prepare at the highest level. The Prime Minister’s address is expected to acknowledge that collective effort and to celebrate the athletes as role models for millions of young Indians.

The record performance at Aichi-Nagoya marks a clear step forward for para-sport in India. From a time when para-athletes competed with far less attention and support, India now fields a large, confident contingent that returns from major championships with a three-figure medal tally. Each of the 97 athletes who travelled to Japan carried the expectations of a country that is learning to follow para-sport with the same passion it has long shown for other disciplines. When the Prime Minister meets them on November 5, the message will be simple: the nation noticed, the nation is proud, and the record of 114 medals is a foundation to build on rather than a peak to rest on.
