The Haryana Government has extended its Chirayu-Ayushman health scheme to middle-income families, bringing a much larger section of the state’s population under government-backed health insurance. The expanded cover comes into effect on November 1, 2026, and will entitle eligible families to cashless treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year at empanelled government and private hospitals across India. Until now, the scheme largely served lower-income households. Under the Chirayu framework, families with a verified annual income between Rs 1.8 lakh and Rs 3 lakh could already obtain Rs 5 lakh of health cover by paying Rs 1,500 a year. That slab continues unchanged. The new decision extends the same Rs 5 lakh annual cover to families earning more than Rs 3 lakh a year, with eligibility determined through the verified income recorded in the Parivar Pehchan Patra, the state’s family identity database. Families with a verified annual income of more than Rs 3 lakh and up to Rs 6 lakh can enrol by paying an annual contribution of Rs 4,000, while families earning more than Rs 6 lakh a year will pay Rs 5,000 a year. Additional Chief Secretary for Health and Family Welfare Dr Sumita Misra announced the expansion following a health department notification issued on October 13, 2026. The registration and payment portal will remain open until November 30, 2026, and the new policy period runs from November 1, 2026 to October 31, 2027. The scheme follows the framework of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and covers 2,694 treatment packages, including medical procedures, surgical treatments and day-care procedures. It covers pre-existing conditions, pre-hospitalisation costs for three days and post-discharge expenses for 15 days, with no cap on family size or age. Eligible families can pay their annual contribution online at chirayuayushmanharyana.in, and beneficiary cards valid for one year can be generated through public hospitals, Common Service Centres, village CSC operators and ASHA workers. The expansion does not cover central or state government employees, retirees, defence and paramilitary personnel, or people already covered under the Central Government Health Scheme, the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme or railway health plans. Citizens aged 70 and above are covered separately under the Vay Vandana Scheme. For middle-income families facing rising hospital bills, the expansion offers a low-cost route to cashless treatment at hospitals across the country.
