Union Home Minister Amit Shah has promised that the Bharatiya Janata Party will implement the Uniform Civil Code in Uttar Pradesh if the party returns to power for a third consecutive term in the state. He made the announcement on Friday while inaugurating the BJP’s state executive committee meeting in Lucknow, as the party steps up preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections.

Addressing party leaders and workers at an auditorium of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, Shah said the code had already been implemented in several states and that Uttar Pradesh would follow if voters gave the BJP another mandate. He told the gathering that when the government came to power again, the Uniform Civil Code would be implemented in Uttar Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, state BJP president and Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, both Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, and other senior party leaders were present at the meeting. The day-long session was held to review the party’s organisational work and draw up its roadmap for the elections ahead.

Shah drew a parallel with the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the BJP had fulfilled that promise as well. He said the party had kept its word on that commitment and that the process had gone ahead without major unrest, presenting it as evidence that the BJP delivers on the promises it makes to voters.

The Lucknow meeting is part of the BJP’s early organisational push in Uttar Pradesh, with the focus on strengthening the party’s grassroots network and improving coordination among its leaders and workers across the state. Party leaders said Shah’s participation would boost the morale of workers and provide guidance ahead of the 2027 polls, when the BJP will seek a third straight term in India’s most populous state.

The Uniform Civil Code has long featured in the BJP’s programme, and Shah’s Lucknow announcement puts it at the centre of the party’s pitch for the Uttar Pradesh election. For the BJP, the message to its cadre was clear: the party’s organisational machine must be ready, and its promises — including the code — will be carried into the campaign.
