The Central Government’s Agnipath scheme gives youth a chance to serve in the armed forces for 4 years. Youth aged 17.5 to 21 become Agniveers — the 23-year age limit was a one-time relaxation only for the first batch in 2022 and does not apply now. During service, pay is ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 a month, and after 4 years a Seva Nidhi package of about ₹11.71 lakh is paid. Agniveers who exit after 4 years do not get a pension.

Pay and Seva Nidhi

Pay starts at ₹30,000 a month in the first year and rises to ₹40,000 a month by the fourth year. Both the Agniveer and the government contribute to the Seva Nidhi — totalling about ₹11.71 lakh after 4 years of service.

The big decision of 4 November 2026 — Second Tour of Duty

On 4 November 2026, the Union Cabinet took a big decision — Agniveers will now get an optional 2-year Second Tour of Duty. That means those who wish can serve 2 more years after their 4-year term. It is optional for now — not compulsory.

Who is eligible and how to apply

Youth aged 17.5 to 21 are eligible for Agnipath — through Army, Navy and Air Force rallies/recruitments. Applications are made on the Army recruitment website joinindianarmy.nic.in or the official website of the respective force.
