The Union government will set up a Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in every state capital by 2027, following directions from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The Ministry of Home Affairs said on Monday that the FRRO network has now grown to 20 offices across the country, as foreign visits to India for tourism, medical treatment and education continue to rise sharply. Five new FRROs have been established since 2025. Jaipur, Chandigarh and Guwahati got new offices in 2025, bringing cities that were earlier served by the Delhi, Amritsar and Kolkata offices under their own local jurisdiction. This year, two more offices became operational in Aizawl in Mizoram and Amravati in Andhra Pradesh. Kohima, Agartala and Bhubaneswar were also notified recently. With these additions, the country now has 20 FRRO offices, located in Ahmedabad, Amravati, Amritsar, Aizawl, Agartala, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chennai, Cochin, Chandigarh, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kohima, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram. For readers in Haryana, the Chandigarh office matters directly, since the region is now served locally instead of through a distant office. The government is now pursuing FRROs in the remaining nine states that do not yet have one — Bihar, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Meghalaya. Once that work is complete, every state capital will have its own office. The expansion is aligned with the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, which brought four earlier laws on immigration and foreign nationals into a single statutory framework governing the entry, stay, movement and exit of foreign nationals. Officials said the wider network has a dual focus: making legitimate travel and stay easier for foreign visitors, and ensuring immigration laws and security requirements are implemented effectively on the ground.
