Air quality across Haryana’s National Capital Region belt worsened on Monday 2 November 2026, with Kaithal recording the state’s worst reading of the morning at 324, placing it in the very poor category of the Central Pollution Control Board index. The deterioration came a day after expanded winter pollution-control measures came into force on 1 November, and it mirrored a broader slide across Delhi and the neighbouring region.

In the morning readings published by the pollution board, Delhi stood at around 307 to 310, while Noida was close behind at 308 to 311, both in the very poor band. Within Haryana, Gurugram recorded 225 to 230, which falls in the poor category, and Faridabad was notably better at 116 to 118, in the moderate category. Ghaziabad, just across the border, stood at 276 to 278, also poor.

The board classifies readings from 201 to 300 as poor and from 301 to 400 as very poor. At those levels, health advisories warn that prolonged exposure can cause breathing discomfort for most people, and can aggravate respiratory illness, with children, elderly people and those with existing lung conditions most at risk. People in the worst-affected areas were advised to limit prolonged outdoor exertion and to take precautions on smoggy mornings.

By 4 pm, the board’s bulletin still showed poor air in much of the NCR belt, with Gurugram at 246, Manesar at 211, Ballabgarh at 278 and Dharuhera at 298, while Faridabad remained moderate at 115. Elsewhere in Haryana the picture was mixed and better: Karnal recorded 47 in the good category and Panipat 84 in the satisfactory category, while Rohtak at 174 and Sonipat at 161 were moderate. The contrast underlines how local conditions, wind and nearby sources can push neighbouring cities into very different bands on the same day.

The Union government’s Air Quality Early Warning System had forecast that pollution would remain in the poor category until Tuesday before turning very poor on Wednesday, and would stay in the very poor to poor range until around 10 November. With winter setting in and the festival season approaching, officials and residents alike will be watching the daily bulletins closely, as the coming days are expected to test the new winter curbs now in force.
