Chandigarh. Haryana’s guest teachers are scheduled to meet Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on 2 November, in a meeting fixed after Cabinet Minister Anil Vij intervened in their march towards Chandigarh. The teachers had been marching under the banner of the Guest Teachers Joint Struggle Morcha to press their long-pending demand for regularisation of services.

The march, which began from Kurukshetra, was suspended after a delegation of teachers met Minister Vij near his residence in Ambala Cantonment. Following that discussion, the minister assured the teachers that a meeting with the Chief Minister would be arranged on 2 November at the Chief Minister’s Office, and that he would take up their case strongly with the government and seek implementation of the relevant court directions.

At the heart of the teachers’ demand is the regularisation of 10,757 guest teachers who, according to the morcha, have served in Haryana’s Education Department for nearly 21 years. The teachers want the state government to initiate the regularisation process under the three-year policy formulated in 2014, and to act on the court directions in the matter.

Morcha president Krishan Dharshool said after the meeting with Minister Vij that the teachers were hopeful the government would accept their demand. He made it clear, however, that the suspension of the march was conditional, and that the teachers would resume their yatra from Ambala Cantonment if the issue was not resolved.

The 2 November meeting is therefore an important next step for thousands of guest teachers across the state. A positive outcome would bring relief to teachers who have spent years working in government schools without permanent status, while also giving the government a chance to settle a demand that has been pending for a long time.

No final decision on regularisation has been announced yet, and the teachers’ representatives have said they will judge the outcome by the progress made in the meeting. For now, all eyes are on the discussion at the Chief Minister’s Office and on the assurances given to the delegation.
