India has emerged as the world leader in green hydrogen offtake commitments, with Indian developers signing 23 major contracts covering more than 5.55 lakh tonnes of green hydrogen and its derivatives every year. Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi announced the milestone on October 29, saying the agreements carry an estimated investment potential of more than Rs 90,000 crore, or about 9.5 billion dollars. More than 70 per cent of the contracted volume is committed for exports, mainly to buyers in Europe and Japan, including companies such as Japan’s IHI and JERA, Germany’s Uniper and Hintco, and South Korea’s Samsung C and T. The export focus shows that Indian suppliers are now offering competitive prices for green ammonia and green methanol in global markets. In 2026 alone, Indian companies signed 18 new offtake agreements for more than 4 lakh tonnes a year of green hydrogen-equivalent products. One of the largest deals is ACME Group’s contract to supply 4,88,000 tonnes a year of green ammonia to Japan’s IHI, along with 1,00,000 tonnes a year of green methanol to Mitsubishi Gas Chemical of Japan. The progress flows from the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in January 2023 with an initial outlay of Rs 19,744 crore to make India a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. The mission aims to build domestic manufacturing capacity, create green jobs and cut dependence on fossil fuels. It is important to be clear about what the figure means: the 5.55 lakh tonnes a year refers to offtake commitments, which are agreements by buyers to purchase future supplies, not green hydrogen already being produced. Even so, the commitments give producers greater certainty about demand and support investment decisions for new plants. Domestic demand is also being developed through the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition programme under the mission, so that Indian industry can use clean hydrogen alongside exports. The milestone strengthens India’s journey towards net-zero leadership and green job creation, the minister said.
