Haryana will construct a 90-room guest house on 6.5 acres at Brahma Sarovar in Kurukshetra at a cost of Rs 120 crore, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced while reviewing preparations for the International Gita Jayanti celebrations at the 83rd meeting of the Kurukshetra Development Board. Governor Ashim Kumar Ghosh chaired the meeting of the board’s governing body.

The International Gita Jayanti celebrations will be held in Kurukshetra from 5 to 25 December. Saini said West Bengal and Delhi will participate as partner states this year. For the first time, the Indian Navy, Air Force, Indian Space Research Organisation and Indian Council for Cultural Relations will take part in the exhibition organised during the festival.

Alongside the guest house, the Chief Minister announced a Guru Tegh Bahadur Singh Gate at Purushottampura, renovation of the ancient Draupadi Koop in line with Archaeology Department recommendations, and beautification of Brahma Sarovar with peacock-feather-shaped lights and tiles. An entrance gate and a Gita Pillar will also be built at Jyotisar.

Governor Ghosh stressed better transport and connectivity for devotees and tourists visiting the festival, calling for improved access to the fairgrounds and expanded bus services so visitors face no inconvenience. The board meeting was attended by Swami Gyananand Maharaj, local elected representatives, administrative officers and board members, who reviewed preparations, the outline of events and arrangements.

The International Gita Mahotsav has been held annually in Kurukshetra since at least 2016, drawing pilgrims, scholars and diplomats from across the world to the city associated with the revelation of the Bhagavad Gita. Haryana has used the festival as a vehicle for spiritual tourism, cultural diplomacy and global visibility, with theatrical performances, Gita-recitation competitions and international delegations.

The new guest house and the works at Brahma Sarovar and Jyotisar are aimed at strengthening the facilities for the large numbers who visit during the festival, while the partner-state participation and the first-time presence of the armed forces and space and cultural bodies point to a wider national showcase for Kurukshetra this December.
