Haryana 270 Primary Schools Redesignated: English Medium From Class 1 in Government Schools
Haryana’s School Education Department has redesignated over 270 government primary schools across the state, bringing them under new names aligned with premier secondary institutions and mandating English-medium instruction from Class 1.
Under the notification, government primary schools attached to or located within the premises of Model Sanskriti, Chief Minister Excellence and Early English (CMEEE) and PM Shri senior secondary and high schools will be reclassified as Government Chief Minister Excellence and Early English Primary Schools and Government Model Sanskriti Primary Schools. English-medium teaching will be mandatory from Class 1, with Hindi and English sections from Class 2 onwards.
The move is aimed at giving children in government schools early access to English-medium education, along with better academic infrastructure. Officials say the change will help families who currently send children to private schools because of staff shortages or the absence of English-medium teaching in nearby government schools.
Teachers for the redesignated primary schools will be deployed through a screening process, on the lines followed for Model Sanskriti Schools, PM Shri Schools and CMEEE Schools. The department says this will help maintain teaching standards in the newly classified schools.
No extra fees will be charged in the Chief Minister Excellence and Early English Primary Schools, while the Model Sanskriti Primary Schools will receive Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi from the 2027-28 academic session, to support their development.
The teachers’ association has welcomed the move, saying early English-medium education and better infrastructure will benefit students, particularly those from economically weaker sections, and could help raise enrolment in government schools. District Education Officer Ambala Sudhir Kalra said the department’s notification on redesignation has been issued across the state, and the mandatory English-medium instruction will benefit students.
The redesignation is part of Haryana’s wider effort to strengthen government primary education, bringing primary schools into step with the model and excellence schools they are attached to, so that children get a consistent standard of teaching from the earliest classes.
