Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday set a new clean energy ambition for India, saying the country should add 500 gigawatts of new non-fossil fuel power capacity over the next 10 to 11 years. He said the target will open investment opportunities worth more than Rs 20 lakh crore in the renewable energy sector.

Addressing the India Energy Week and the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit in New Delhi, Modi said India has already crossed a major milestone: more than half of its installed power capacity now comes from non-fossil fuel sources. That, he said, shows the pace at which India is moving towards clean energy, even as its overall energy demand continues to grow.

The prime minister said India is among the few large economies where renewable capacity is expanding rapidly, with solar power playing a leading role. He pointed to the growth of solar parks, rooftop solar and green energy manufacturing, and said the coming decade will see even larger projects, new technologies and fresh investment in storage, green hydrogen and related areas.

Modi also underlined that clean energy is not only about climate goals, but also about energy security and jobs. More domestic renewable capacity means less dependence on imported fuels, more manufacturing in India and more work for engineers, technicians and skilled workers across states, including Haryana, where solar and green projects are expanding.

For households and farmers, the push matters through schemes that support rooftop solar and solar-powered irrigation, which can cut electricity costs over time. For businesses, the prime minister’s message was that the policy direction is stable and the market is large, making India a place where long-term clean energy investment can grow.

The 500-gigawatt target sets the scale of the next phase: it is roughly double the non-fossil capacity India has built so far, and it will require sustained investment, grid expansion and faster project execution. Modi’s remarks position clean energy as a central part of India’s growth story for the next decade.
