The West Bengal government has notified a new scheme offering one Group D government job to an eligible member of the family of each person killed in political violence in the state since 1 January 2001. The scheme, formally titled the West Bengal Scheme for Providing Government Employment (Group D Post) to One Eligible Family Member of the Victims Killed in Political Violence 2026, will come into force after its publication in the official gazette.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the decision on 31 October 2026 while addressing a gathering at Garbeta in Paschim Medinipur, telling affected families to apply to their District Magistrate. The formal notification, signed by Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal, was reported on 1 November 2026, a day after the announcement. Appointments will be made as a one-time exception through the creation of additional Group D posts, without affecting normal recruitment or existing vacancies.

Under the scheme, one dependent family member of each victim can be offered a Group D post. Eligible applicants include the spouse, son, daughter or third-gender child of the deceased, and, where the victim was unmarried, a brother or sister. The benefit covers incidents of political violence occurring on or after 1 January 2001, a period of about 25 years.

Applicants must meet a set of conditions. The family’s monthly income must not exceed Rs 50,000, and no member of the family should be in regular government service or be an income-tax payer. The applicant must ordinarily have passed Class 8, must be at least 18 years old as on 1 January 2026, and must remain within the prescribed upper age limit, reported as 45 years for the general category and 50 years for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe applicants.

Applications must be submitted to the District Magistrate of the district where the incident occurred, along with a death certificate, proof of relationship with the deceased, and documents relating to the incident, including the first information report and charge sheet where available. A district-level screening committee headed by the District Magistrate, with the Superintendent of Police or Deputy Commissioner and a prosecution department representative as members, will examine and verify each application and is to dispose of applications within 90 days of receipt.

The notification makes clear that the scheme does not confer an automatic right to government employment. Final appointments will depend on the screening committee’s recommendation, the availability of posts, police verification and a medical examination. The government has presented the scheme as financial support for families that lost their breadwinners, giving them a route into government service outside the standard recruitment process.
